You can start a referral program to fast-track people’s knowledge of your product. This is as a result of the fact that word of the mouth does not come automatically.
You are expected to give enough incentives to your existing customers so that they bring in more customers for you. It is as if you are creating networkers for your company.
The more customers they bring for you the more reward they get. It becomes a win-win situation for you and your customers. They get their rewards and you get your new customers that will ultimately prosper your business.
All you need to do is to give your customers enough reason to market your business for you. If you have listed your supposed powerful marketing Strategies/Ideas and there is no referral or reward strategy, I’m telling you that you have to rewrite it.

When it comes to acquiring new customers, the power of referral is an opportunity you shouldn’t blink for a second to grab because…it is a lot easier and effortless for someone (client) who has real-time experience of your business to convince a fellow to buy your product.
#No.3 Word-of-mouth works
People naturally like talking and this is even predominant in Africa. You should use it to your advantage.
Word of mouth advertising is probably the oldest form of advertising. It is quite an old school but it still holds its importance today despite the fact the world is dominated by technology.
Satisfy a customer, even without any incentive and they will naturally talk about your product or services. If you are into hair making and hair accessories sales and you take care of a sister well, my brother, my sister, expect the girl to brag about the best stylist in town and expect customer’s influx.
It is like that with virtually everything. You know how we do it here. All you need to do is to wow your customers and expect them to do magic. Satisfied customers are one of the most effective ways to market your products.
If you are going to consider mouth to mouth strategy as one of your powerful marketing ideas in Africa, you are expected to know the levels of customer satisfaction.
There are two levels. In the first instance, you have to sell a product that solves a problem. Your product has to be very great. Secondly, you are expected to treat your customers as kings and queens. Give them great attention and expect them to shout your name from the rooftop.
#No.4 Word of Mouth via Influencers (Celebrities)
Now your product is great, your customer service is amazing, it is time to reach out to influencers. These could be leaders of industries and top celebrities. They have the heavy following and if they can say a word for you, you are on your way to heaven baby.
It doesn’t come easy though. If you can afford them, it wouldn’t be a big problem.
We assume you cannot afford them. What do you do then? Start following them on social media, patiently engage in conversations with them if you can, like and share their posts and offer free services to them.
All you will need is for them to put up a kind word for you. It really works. It is a blockbuster in the powerful marketing ideas available to small businesses.
#No.5 Give out free stuff and see the wonders involved
Have you ever wondered why many big start-ups begin the free stuff idea? It is because everybody likes free things.
Learn to start with giving free stuff and see what your business becomes. You can use the buy 3 and get 1 freestyle. It attracts customers. You should try it out.
#No.6 Offer discounts and deals
Just like free stuff, discounts and deals work well too if managed very well. They are another creative and low-cost way to attract new customers fast to your business without necessarily having to spend millions.
It is largely regarded as an opportunity to save money and enjoy great products from the customers. You should exploit it.
Discounts and deals usually have ways of influencing customers to buy more products or services than they initially planned. This is because they love to ‘take the opportunity’ because the same products may not be so cheap tomorrow.
Offering deals and discounts are also regarded as a powerful way to publicize your brand. It is one of the powerful marketing Strategy in Nigeria.
#No.7 Start a Contest or competition
Appeal to the competitive nature of your customers. Everybody likes to win. Use it to your advantage.
Start a contest and announce the prize and set the rules of the game that will allow you be the ultimate winner of the contest. It is part of the powerful marketing ideas that are tested and trusted.
Just work within your means and you will emerge victorious at the end.
#No.8 Get an Active Website
This is the twenty-first century, get a website already. The size of your business notwithstanding, you need an active website. Even if it is a single page, get your website running and well managed.
Our world is much more connected now than it ever was because of the effects of the internet. Most people simply use the internet nowadays when they need to find a product or service.
What you should fight for is that when customers are looking for a particular product in your area, they will be able to find you on the internet. It brings you to customers that you never knew about.
Owning your own website is no longer a luxury that only big companies enjoy. The internet has now made it possible for everybody to enjoy the opportunity of getting found.
Everybody is coming in; you should be among them because it is an important aspect of the powerful marketing ideas needed to attract customers in this part of the world.
#No.9 Use the Social Media to engage customers
Most people are on social media and the social media has become such a convenient method of attracting new customers for businesses across a wide variety of verticals.
You can use any of the five biggest social media platforms — Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and LinkedIn for your business marketing. You can exploit both the free and paid options. You just can’t miss out on this.
#No.10 Get Listed on Popular Local Directories
As a result of the internet, small businesses can be listed for free on local directories.
The implication is that when a small business is registered on a local directory, people around the world can find it on the map and view its contact information. The best part is, I know you will like this, you don’t have to pay anything to become registered on these directories. Some of the most popular ones out there are VConnect, Google Places, Yahoo Local and Bing Places.
#No.11 Google My Business
Ranking your Google My Business (GMB) listing is one of the most powerful things you can do for your business.
In fact, if you run a local business targeting local clients, I would dare to say it is THE most powerful strategy available to you.
For example, if someone searches for a “Hotels in Nigeria”, this is what they see:
What you are seeing here is one paid ad, followed by THREE Google My Business listings before we even see the normal organic search results. If you can rank your GMB listing in these top 3, you can pull in large numbers of highly qualified leads day in and day out without needing to spend a dime on ads.
Google My Business combines all your different Google platforms into one central place, which includes your Google+ profile, Google Maps profile, your Google reviews, access to data on Google Analytics and Google Insights, and more.
#No.12 Content Marketing
18% of marketers say that content marketing has the greatest commercial impact on their business of any channel in 2016.
Content marketing is the process of creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly-defined audience and drive profitable customer action.
Unlike paid advertising, content marketing focuses more on long-term results. The initial payoff tends to be low, but the long-term, sustainable growth in visitors, leads, and customers can single-handedly carry a business.
Content marketing is not easy, however, and requires every element to be done right:
- Quality content
- Relevant topics
- Optimized for SEO
- Optimized for readers
- Consistent content creation & promotion
Content is not limited to blog posts. It includes videos, podcasts, online courses, and a host of other mediums in which people consume information.
If you are considering this strategy for your own business, make sure you have the time and capital needed to get going with no initial ROI, and then DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Too many businesses these days are just wasting resources creating mediocre content with no payoff, now or ever.
#No. 13 Don’t just sell — engage.
As an entrepreneur, your instinct may push you to sell to everyone you meet. Though there’s nothing wrong with flaunting your brand now and then, it’s important to give your company relevance and participate in discussions that don’t quite revolve around your business.
With social media, it’s easy to engage your target demographic without looking like you’re just trying to advertise. Some businesses may leave encouraging comments on photos of people’s food; sports equipment retailers. Build brand trust by showing your support, whether of your community or your online following.
Next time someone’s looking for a product or service within your niche, they’ll remember your kindness and go to you. Sharing someone else’s content doesn’t necessarily mean losing your audience’s attention.
#No.14 Scratch their back, they’ll scratch yours.
If you’re just starting out, you may have a hard time introducing your company to the public. A great way to build a niche and generate word-of-mouth is through samples and giveaways.
Try reaching out to eager members of your target audience and offering up your commodity (or a sample slice of it) in return for a review and shares on social media.
Those who participate get a cool new item or experience to share with their friends, while you get trust and visibility — another win-win. You don’t want to give up your entire stock all at once, but sharing it with a select few could give you a marketing edge.
#No.15 Co-sponsor an event within your niche.
Every industry hosts its special events: they are a lot of Conferences especially for traditional and digital marketers, you guessed it — interior designers. Unless an event is owned and managed by a single company, most planners seek out sponsors to help fund the event.
This provides you with a fantastic niche marketing opportunity. Next time you’re thinking about attending an event within your industry, see if it has any sponsorship spots open. Better yet, ask whether you can present there (or otherwise spotlight your company) to further engage attendees. Aside from giving you a good name, co-sponsoring a niche event allows you to meet and greet with your target demographic, network and generate new leads.
#No. 16 Define Your Startup Sensitivities
“Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.” – Sun-tzu
By identifying competitors’ strengths and weaknesses, one can better understand how to market one’s product as better. Why is their solution to the universal problem their product solves better than those before it?
Be creative. Use spreadsheets, visual imagery or lists. Harness all of the information available on the product and its competitors, and study it. Look at each closely and determine strengths and weaknesses. If there are others who have an edge, then look at an angle where they are lacking.
#No.17 Setting a Budget
At the end of the day, it all comes down to the money. How much can you afford to spend on your startup marketing strategy? Remember that while inbound marketing leads cost 61% less than outbound marketing leads, they are not free. Set a budget early in the game and accept that limitation.
“57% of startup marketing managers are not basing their marketing budgets on any ROI analysis.”
More importantly, carefully plan how you intend to divide that budget.
